V,Narayanan (Maalan) is an eminent bilingual (Tamil and English) writer and journalist, who has contributed substantially to literature, language, journalism and for the welfare of the community in various ways.
Esteemed Writer
He is awarded with the coveted Sahitya Akademi’s Translation Prize(2021 )and Bharaiya Basha Parishad award for wholesomeness in creativity (‘Krititva Samagra Samman’) in 2017. The government of Tamilnadu has honoured him with the best Translator award in 2019. He is also a Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow of Singapore, the first and the only Indian to receive that honour. He is a member of the General Council of Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of letters) and Lalit Kala Akademi (National Akademy of arts). He is also a member of Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (National Mission for Libraries) He is the convenor for Tamil Basha Samiti of Saraswathi Samman.
He was invited as Chief Guest for Writers Week of Singapore (1995), Singapore Reading Festival (2003), Read Singapore (2013) Festival of India -Malaysia (2015), Forum for Literature Development, China Writer’s Association (2018) and by London Tamil Literary Forum (2016)

Distinguished Journalist
As a distinguished journalist, he had the distinction of leading the premier Tamil journals namely India Today (Tamil) Dinamani, Kumudam and Kungumam, Puthiya Thalaimurai as its Editor. He is also considered as a pioneer in television journalist as was the founding Editor of Sun News Channel of Sun Television network which is the first 24×7 news channel in any regional language. He retired as Director –Planning and Development of Puthiya Thalaimurai TV iin 2016
Three decades ago, even before the arrival of satellite televisions, when live telecasts were rare, he has anchored the live election analysis for Doordarshan Kendra Chennai during the 1991 elections
He was a regular broadcaster in BBC Tamil service for over 10 years, presenting a Newsletter every month from 1989 to 2000
He has also served as the National Media Advisor for India for The Hunger Project, a global movement committed to ending chronic hunger in the world.

Academic Recognitions
St.Xavier’s College, Palaymcottai, an autonomous institution of 90 years standing with A++ ranking from NACC organised a one-day seminar on the works of Maalan wherein Professors from Madurai Kamaraj University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and two Sahitya Akademi awardees discussed his works.
His book was a book on contemporary writing in Madurai Kamaraj University and in Kerala University.

Community Service
Fighting Drug Abuse
Along with renowned Tamil writer Sivasankari, Maalan co-founded a public charity trust Awakened Group for National Integration (AGNI) in the year 1986. AGNI organised various programs for youth and the most important among them is its fight against drug addiction Three important projects of Agni in its fight against drug abuse are :
PROJECT – LET US SAY NO TO DRUGS: AGNI launched a campaign titled ‘Let Us Say No to Drugs’ in December 1987, under which a 22-minute video film in Tamil titled ‘Ore Oru Tharam’ (meaning Just Once) was produced. Renowned film producers A.V.M. Productions, Chennai, made 100 prints of the same and the Rotary International Dt. 323 helped in taking this film to 1,00,000 children in Tamil Nadu.
A signature campaign was organized, in which more than 50,000 signatures were collected from people of Tamil Nadu asking for stringent punishment to drug pushers and peddlers, and the petition was handed over to the then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi, which contributed to the amendment of the law.
PROJECT – SURVEY ON LEVEL OF ADDICTION: On a request from the Welfare Department of the Government of India, a survey on the level of addiction among slum dwellers in the three major cities namely, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad were conducted. With the able co-operation of ‘ADAPT’, the Rehabilitation Centre of Apollo Hospitals, this survey was carried out successfully. It was a shocking revelation that 57% of the slum dwellers at Chennai – mostly industrial workers and daily labourers – were alcoholics
PROJECT – RAJAJI CENTRE FOR DE-ADDICTION: This survey necessitated the launching of a massive awareness campaign amongst industrial labourers and slum-dwellers against alcohol. In January 1990 AGNI ventured on a macro-level programme.While conducting the awareness programmes in the slums, AGNI felt the dire need for a de-addiction centre for the economically weaker section of the society. And AGNI was instrumental in starting ‘Rajaji Centre for De-Addiction’ in the Voluntary health Services Hospital at Taramani in Chennai on 14.11.1991
Empowerment of Woman
As the National Media Advisor of The Hunger Project a global organisation headquartered in New York, he worked to create media awareness on issues related to women empowerment at the grass root level. Panchayat Raj, the third tier of government, was created in 1992 through a constitutional amendment. It was mandated that a third of seats in Panchayat be reserved for women. This brought one million women, most of them for the first time, into the local governance. On behalf of The Hunger Project, he trained the newly elected women representatives on how to handle the media.
Through AGNI a foundation co-founded by him he launched a campaign ANBU (Awareness Needed for Betterment of Underprivileged) to bring awareness on discrimination against women: In India, women are discriminated against from birth. To de-condition the minds of people from this attitude and to give the woman her due place in the society AGNI produced four television spots with famous film stars and an audiotape with the help of Global Hunger Project in India. They were telecast and broadcast frequently and the cinema houses were requested to show the spots for a year.
Strengthening National Integration
Through AGNI a Project, called BHARAT DHARSHAN was organised to inculcate national Integration in the minds of school children. In the year 1986, twenty extraordinary students were hand-picked from various schools of Tamil Nadu, were taken on a tour to New Delhi and were made to take a pledge at Rajghat that they will strive to become better citizens and human beings in future.
AGNI launched another project KAVIRATHRI with writers and poets. ‘A Day of Literature’ inviting top writers, poets and journalists from all the four southern states of India to read their works to the audience in their respective languages and thus building up a fellowship among people of various states, irrespective of their language differences, was organized twice.
Skill Building for Youth
With a view to channelize the potentials of the youth in the proper way, AGNI had a very effective training programme ‘Leadership Education Action Programme’ (LEAP) which was launched for 50 teenagers in Mayiladuthurai in February 1995. Keeping the holistic development of the participants in mind, interesting workshops on leadership training, problem-solving skills, positive thinking and effective communication were designed in consultation with experts. By the end of the programme, there was an excellent response from the youth who are sure to emerge as better human beings and committed citizens of India.
Disaster Management
He played a leading role in developing a disaster management plan for 17 village panchayats in Tsunami affected Nagapattinam District in Tamilnadu for The Hunger Project. Every village in the panchayat was mapped, every household members including cattle were listed, potential threats were identified, possible shelters were located and a list of helplines was provided in these maps..The maps were digitised apart from printed hard copies for better preservation.
Literacy Movement
Appointed as a member of the steering committee to eradicate illiteracy by Government of Tamilnadu in 1997. During his tenure, he organised literacy camps in various districts of Tamilnadu.
Library Movement
Served in the Government Of Tamilnadu’s Committee to revamp the public libraries. Through his efforts, Readers’ Circle (Vasakar Vattam) were created in every public library. He was advocating for making public libraries community-oriented and for inviting readers’ suggestions for buying books for public libraries.
Currently, he is a Foundation member of Raja Rammoan Roy Library Foundation.
Information Technology
He played a key role in the validation of the Tamil version of the Microsoft Office Suite and also compiled a Community Tamil Glossary of technical terms related to Information Technology. He served as the Editor of Minmanjari, a journal for Tamil computing published by the International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil (INFITT). He was a member of INFITT’s Executive Board. from 2001 to 2010
Journalism Education
He has served on the Board of Studies of Journalism of Madurai Kamaraj University and Madras University.

இவ்ரது கதைகள் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் மற்ற இந்திய மொழிகளிலும் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு இல்லஸ்ட்ரேடட் வீக்லி ஆஃப் இந்தியா,(ஆங்கிலம்) டெகான் ஹெரால்ட், (ஆங்கிலம்) இந்தியா டுடே (மலையாளம்) மாத்ருபூமி (மலையாளம்) விபுலா(இந்தி) ஆகிய இதழ்களில் வெளியாகியுள்ளன. கல்கத்தாவில் உள்ள Writers Workshop தனது ஆங்கிலத் தொகுப்பில் இவரது கதைகளை வெளியிட்டிருக்கிறது.சீனம் மலாய் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் மொழி பெயர்க்கப்பட்ட கதையொன்று சிங்கப்பூர் தேசிய நூலக வாரியம் தொகுத்து வெளியிட்ட ஒரே வானம் தொகுதியில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது.
இவரது கவிதைகள் சாகித்ய அகதாமியின் தொகுப்பில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன. எமெர்ஜென்சி நாட்களில் அதை விமர்சித்து இவர் எழுதிய கவிதை அமெரிக்காவின் டஃப்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகப் பேராசிரியர் ஜான் ஆலிவர் பெரி தொகுத்த Voices of Emergency-an anthology of protest poetry என்ற நூலில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது. இவரது புகழ் பெற்ற நாவலான ஜன கண மன ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு GG என்ற பெயரில் நூலாக வெளிவந்துள்ளது.
சிங்கப்பூர் அரசின் ஆதரவோடு நடத்தப்படும் ‘எழுத்தாளர் வாரம்’ நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு 1993ம் ஆண்டு சிறப்பு விருந்தினராக அழைக்கப்பட்டு கெளரவிக்கப்பட்டவர். 2011ம் ஆண்டு சிங்கப்பூர் அரசு நிறுவனமான நூல்கள் மேம்பாட்டு மன்றத்தால் (Singapore National Book development Council) அந்நாட்டுப் படைப்பாளிகளுக்குப் புனைகதைப் பயிலரங்கு நடத்துமாறு அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்.2013ம் ஆண்டு சிங்கப்பூர் தேசிய நூலக வாரியம் (National Library Board) நடத்திய வாசிப்போம் சிங்கப்பூர் (Read Singapore!) நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்
சாவியால் துவக்கப்பட்ட தமிழின் முதல் இளைஞர் இதழான திசைகள் இதழின் ஆசிர்யராக தனது இதழியல் பணிகளைத் துவக்கியவர்.” எண்பதுகளில் எழுத வந்த அத்தனை இளைஞர்களும் உச்சரித்த மந்திரச் சொல் மாலன்’ என விமர்சகர்களால் குறிப்பிடப்படும் இவர், நாளிதழ்கள், பருவ இதழ்கள், தொலைக்காட்சி, வானொலி, இணையம் என அனைத்து வகை ஊடகங்களிலும் செயலாற்றிய ஒரே தமிழ்ப் பத்திரிகையாளர். இந்திய மொழிகளில் முதன் முதலில் துவக்கப்பட்ட 24மணிநேர செய்தித் தொலைக்காட்சியான சன் நியூஸ் தொலைக்காட்சியின் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பேற்று நடத்தியவர். பிபிசியின் தமிழ்ச் சேவைப் பிரிவான தமிழோசையில் 10 ஆண்களுக்கு மேலாக மாதந்தோறும் செய்தி விமர்சனங்களை அளித்து வந்துள்ள இவர், சிங்கப்பூரின் ஒரே தமிழ் நாளிதழான தமிழ் முரசில் நான்காண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாகத் தொடர்ந்து வாரம் தோறும் எழுதியுள்ளார். தி ஹங்கர் புரோஜக்ட் என்ற சர்வதேச நிறுவனத்தின் ஊடக ஆலோசகராகப் பணியாற்றிவர்.
அமெரிக்காவின் ஃபுளோரிடா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் இதழியலில் முதுநிலைப் பட்டம் பெற்றவர். அங்கு மாணவராக இருந்தபோது, 1990களிலேயே , மின் இதழ்களுக்கான முன் மாதிரியை (prototype for electronic newspaper) வடிவமைத்தவர். 2003ல் தமிழில் முதன் முதலில் யூனிகோடில் அமைந்த திசைகள் மின்இதழைத் துவக்கியவர்.
மைக்ரோசாஃப்டின் எம்.எஸ்.ஆபீஸ் பொதி தமிழ்ப்படுத்தப்பட்டபோது அதைச் சரிபார்த்து ஒப்புதல் அளித்ததோடு அவர்களுக்காக கணிச் சொல் அகராதி ஒன்றினையும் தொகுத்தளித்தவர்.
நெல்லை மனோன்மணியம் சுந்தரனார் பல்கலைக்கழகம், திருச்சி பாரதிதாசன் பல்கலைக்கழகம் ஆகியவற்றில் செனட் உறுப்பினராக, அந்நாள் ஆளுநர்கள் டாக்டர்.சென்னா ரெட்டி, திரு.சுர்ஜித் சிங் பர்னாலா ஆகியோரால் நியமிக்கப்பட்டவர். சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் உள்பட பல்வேறு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் இதழியல் பாடத்திட்டங்களை வகுக்கும் குழுவில் பங்களித்த இவர் இப்போது எஸ்.ஆர்.எம். பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் ஆலோசகராகவும் பங்களித்து வருகிறார். சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் தமிழ் இலக்கியத் துறையின் (முதுநிலை) பாடத்திட்டக் குழு உறுப்பினர்.
அமெரிக்கா, இங்கிலாந்து, போச்சுகல், பிரான்ஸ், ஆஸ்திரேலியா, இலங்கை, சிங்கப்பூர், ஜப்பான், ஹாங்காங், பிலிப்பைன்ஸ், தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா ஆகிய நாடுகளுக்கு அழைப்பின் பேரில் சென்று வந்துள்ள மாலன், சமகால இலக்கிய, அரசியல், விஷயங்கள் குறித்து மெல்பேர்ன், சிங்கப்பூர் போன்ற வெளிநாட்டுப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்கள் உள்பட பல அறிஞர் அவைகளில் உரையாற்றியிருக்கிறார்.
