Supported by UNESCO and the Government of India, during the years between 1997 and 2000 Government of Tamilnadu embarked on an active mission -Arivoli Iyakkam (enlightenment movement) to promote literacy and to reach its 100% level in the state. An advisory panel was constituted by the government to guide and advise the mission which was administrated by an IAS officer full time.
I had the previlage of serving in the panel
A multi pronged approach was initiated. Volunteers were enlisted and a village was entrusted to each one of them. Departments of non-formal education, Continuous education were involved. Continuous education centers were planned. Books for new literates were published
